Hello, friends! This is Ryabinin Camps, and today we’re talking about a true classic of figure skating—the Toe Loop jump. If you want to master this jump or make it more stable and beautiful, this article is for you.
What is the Toe Loop and Why is it So Important?
The Toe Loop is one of the six basic jumps in figure skating. It is a toe jump, as the takeoff is assisted by the toe pick of the skate. This jump is often used as the second or third jump in a combination, for example, in a Lutz-Toe Loop or Axel-Toe Loop sequence. The ability to perform a quality Toe Loop is fundamental for a successful performance at competitions.
The Correct Technique
As with any jump, every detail matters in the Toe Loop.
Entry. The Toe Loop is usually performed from a backward approach, from the right foot (for right-handed skaters) and the left foot (for left-handed skaters). It is important to gain enough speed and maintain balance.
Takeoff. This is the key moment. The takeoff is initiated with the toe pick of the free leg, which is brought forward. At the same time, the skating leg performs a backward curve. It is important not to "hang" on the toe pick, but to push off quickly and powerfully.
In-air Position. In the air, the body should be compact and centered. The arms are held tight against the body, and the free leg is pulled close to the skating leg. This helps you rotate faster.
Landing. The landing is on a backward edge, on one foot, on the outside edge of the blade. The free leg should be straightened and extended backward.
Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Even experienced skaters sometimes face problems. Here are some of them:
Incorrect takeoff. If you push off with your entire foot instead of the toe pick, the jump will be weak and low.
Poor centering in the air. If you "throw out" your arms and legs, you will lose rotational speed and won't be able to complete the required number of revolutions.
Falling on the landing. This can be due to landing on a flat blade instead of the outside edge.
Don't despair! All these mistakes can be corrected under the guidance of an experienced coach.
