The back spin is one of the most fundamental yet challenging skills in figure skating. It is not just a spin; it is the critical prerequisite for mastering the loop jump and the back scratch position found in advanced combination spins. At Ryabinin Camps, we believe that perfecting the mechanics of the back spin is essential for any skater looking to advance their technical level.
In our latest video tutorial, we break down the anatomy of a perfect back spin. Watch the video below, and read on for a detailed breakdown of the physics and feeling of the movement.
The 3 Pillars of a Successful Back Spin
To achieve a centered, fast, and aesthetically pleasing spin, you must focus on three distinct phases. If one phase is off, the axis will tilt, and the spin will travel across the ice.
1. The Entry: Creating the Curve
The entry sets the destiny of the spin. Many skaters make the mistake of rushing the entrance.
- The Edge: You must enter on a deep Right Back Inside (RBI) edge (for CCW skaters) to create the necessary rotational momentum.
- The Wind-Up: Use your free arm and free leg to create potential energy.
- The Transition: As you step onto the spinning foot, the weight must transfer instantly to the ball of the foot, catching the outside edge immediately.
2. Positioning: Finding the Axis
Once the hook is set, stability is key.
- The Sweet Spot: The spin happens on the ball of the foot, just behind the toe pick. If you are too far back, you will rock on the heel; too far forward, and the toe pick will kill your speed.
- Alignment: Your head, shoulders, and hips must be stacked directly over the skating knee. Think of a pole running vertically through your body into the ice.
3. Proper Grouping: Generating Speed
Grouping is where you convert your entry energy into rotational speed (conservation of angular momentum).
- The Snap: Bring the arms and free leg in simultaneously and sharply. A slow grouping results in a slow spin.
- The Free Leg: In a standard back scratch, the free leg should cross over the shin of the skating leg, pushing down slightly to lock the position.
