Secrets to Success on Ice: How to Build the Most Effective Figure Skating Training

Ratings: 1. Ratings: 5.00 from 5

Figure skating is more than just a sport – it's an art form. Achieving high results requires well-structured and systematic figure skating training. At Ryabinin Camps, we firmly believe that only a comprehensive approach can ensure consistent progress and unlock a skater's full potential.

The journey of becoming a figure skater is a multifaceted path where every element of figure skating training plays a crucial role.

Fundamentals of On-Ice Training
The heart of figure skating training is, of course, the work on the ice. Here, we focus on the following aspects:

Skating Technique: The foundation of all elements. Perfecting proper posture, edges, transitions, steps, and spins. Clean and powerful skating makes jumps easier and creates an aesthetic impression.

Learning and Refining Jumps: From single to multi-rotation, each jump requires a deep analysis of entry technique, take-off, rotation position, and landing. We use video analysis and special exercises to correct errors and improve consistency.

Spins: Mastering various positions, centering, and speed of spins. Working on flexibility and body control for executing complex variations.

Step Sequences: Developing coordination, rhythm, and artistry through the creation and execution of various step patterns.

Program Work: Building choreography, interacting with music, and developing artistic expression and presentation.

The Importance of Off-Ice Conditioning (OFC) and Specialized Physical Preparation (SPP)
Figure skating training isn't limited to the ice. General Physical Preparation (OFC) and Specialized Physical Preparation (SPP) are cornerstones of success:

OFC: Developing overall endurance, strength, flexibility, and coordination. Includes running, jumping, core exercises, back exercises, and strengthening major muscle groups.

SPP: Targeted development of qualities specifically needed by figure skaters:

Jump Training: On-floor jump simulations, resistance band work, plyometric exercises to increase jump height and take-off speed.

Stretching and Flexibility: Improving range of motion necessary for executing complex elements and beautiful positions.

Balance and Coordination: Training on unstable surfaces, exercises with balls, and developing proprioception.

OFC for Figure Skating also includes strength training with an emphasis on core, leg, and back muscles, which provide stability and power on the ice.

Psychological Preparation
The psychological aspect of figure skating training cannot be underestimated. Self-confidence, stress management, concentration, and motivation all impact results. We help our athletes develop these qualities through specific exercises and individual consultations.
