We know that success in figure skating depends on the details. Jump technique is a foundation that requires constant and precise refinement. At our international camps and in our online format, we use proven methods to increase the effectiveness of the training process.
On-Ice Warm-up and Jump Technique: Coach’s Tips
A quality warm-up is key to successful jumps. It should be targeted and include elements that mimic the movements required for the jump.
Here are a few key exercises we use in our training sessions:
Backward Slalom on One Leg with Jumps:
Ensure the edge change happens strictly after the jump, not before.
Be sure to repeat the exercise on both legs for symmetrical development.
Side-to-Side Hops While Moving Backward:
Transfer weight from foot to foot while maintaining stability. This exercise develops coordination and weight control.
Multiple Bounces on Two Feet with a Final Jump Landing on One Foot:
Perform a series of short bounces, ending with a jump landing on the supporting leg. This helps practice grouping and stabilizing the landing.
Bracket on Takeoff:
Change legs with hops, actively working the hips. Control sufficient hip rotation for the correct entry into the jump.
Specific Drills for Spins and Grouping Practice
The importance of spins is often underestimated when practicing jumps. They directly influence the mechanics of rotation in the air.
Backward Spin Focusing on a Pulled-In Position:
Practice your body position in the air. This drill helps reinforce the correct rotation mechanics for jumps.
Alternating Relaxed and Hard Pulled-In Positions:
Use this exercise for active control of rotation speed. Alternate a relaxed position (with the leg bent up) with a hard, pulled-in position to learn how to speed up and slow down rotation.
Ryabinin Camps Online Training: A Personalized Approach
We understand that every skater has unique mistakes. That is why we offer individual online training sessions via Zoom.
Our online sessions allow Ryabinin Camps coaches to analyze your movements, break down mistakes, and provide personalized recommendations, no matter where you are. This is an excellent opportunity for those who want to improve their technique without interrupting their main training routine.
