The Salchow Jump in Figure Skating: Mastering the Fundamentals. Tips from Ryabinin Camps

Ratings: 1. Ratings: 5.00 from 5

Hello to all figure skating enthusiasts! The Ryabinin Camps team is back with you. Today, we're talking about one of the most elegant yet tricky jumps—the Salchow. Named after its creator, Swedish skater Ulrich Salchow, this jump is an essential part of any athlete's repertoire.

What Makes the Salchow Special?
The Salchow is an edge jump. Unlike the Toe Loop, where you push off with the toe pick, the main push here comes from the inside edge of the skate. Executing this jump requires an excellent feel for the edge and a strong sense of balance. The Salchow is often the first double or triple jump that skaters learn. Performing it correctly is key to further progress and successful inclusion in complex combinations.

The Ideal Technique: From Entry to Landing
Entry. A proper Salchow begins with backward motion. You approach the jump point on a backward arc, on the inside edge of your right foot (for right-handed skaters). The free left leg is extended forward, as if to swing into the jump. This motion helps build the momentum needed for rotation.

Takeoff. At the moment of takeoff, the free leg makes a wide arc, and the skating leg quickly leaves the ice. It is important that the swing is not only powerful but also directed upward, not forward. The push-off must be quick and explosive.

In-Air Position. As soon as you leave the ice, you must instantly pull into a tight position. Your arms are held close to your body, and your free leg is neatly brought in next to the skating leg. Your body must be perfectly centered to ensure a smooth and fast rotation.

Landing. The landing is on one foot (the same one you started the jump with) on a backward glide, on the outside edge. The free leg is extended backward to help maintain balance. Smoothness and control are your main allies in this phase.

Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Many skaters encounter similar problems when learning the Salchow:

Pushing off with both feet: This is a common mistake that "kills" the jump. If you push off with both feet, it is not a Salchow, but a completely different element.

Insufficient swing: A weak swing of the free leg does not provide the necessary height and rotational speed.

Incorrect body position: If your body is not compact in the air, you won't be able to complete the required number of revolutions, and the landing will be unstable.

How can you solve these problems? The most effective way is to work with a professional coach.
