Figure Skating Pivot Tutorial: Step-by-Step Guide for Control

Figure Skating Pivot Tutorial: Step-by-Step Guide for Control

Ratings: 1. Ratings: 5.00 from 5

The Pivot (or "Compass") is a beautiful and fundamental move in figure skating. Whether you are working on your inside pivot or outside pivot, mastering this technique is essential for flow and style.

Why is the Pivot Important?

The pivot uses the toe pick of one foot to anchor the rotation while the other foot glides on an edge. It is widely used in:

  • Footwork sequences;
  • Choreographic transitions;
  • Spin entries.

Key Technical Points

  1. Toe Pick Placement: Anchor your weight firmly on the toe pick of the standing leg to create a stable axis.
  2. Edge Control: The gliding foot should maintain a strong edge (inside or outside) without scraping the ice.
  3. Weight Distribution: Keep your weight over the anchor leg. Leaning on the gliding leg is a common mistake.

Pro Tip: Focus on "effortless" movement. Your gliding leg should act like a compass needle drawing a perfect circle.
